Caryn Clark, Heartworks Director,  is a nationally certified licensed massage therapist and member of AMTA.  She brings to her practice a BA in Behavioral Science and Art Therapy, along with 20 years experience in the field of human services.  She is a certified fitness leader, yoga instructor and Reiki practitioner and has been leading successful workshops and retreats for more than 10 years.

Classes For Adults and Teens

Low Impact Aerobics incorporate fluid body movement with light weights for muscle toning and bone strengthening, floor exercises for core conditioning and flexibility, and 20 minutes of joint-friendly, lively, and fun cardiovascular exercise set to music from the 50's through the 80's.  It is a complete and safe workout suitable for all exercisers.

Strength & Balance is a series of weight bearing movements that gently tone muscles and strengthen bones, combined with standing and seated stretches and balances that increase focus and promote general well-being.

Mindful Movement blends the principles of Yoga, Qi Gong and Pilates with light weights and fluid breathing, for a meditative and effective all over body and mind conditioning.

Hatha Yoga  features asanas (postures) that gently stretch the body to release tension and the effects of daily stress, paying close attention to alignment while attending to the breath to calm and center the mind. It is a relaxing class suitable for all levels.

Gentle Yoga for Beginners is an introduction to the practice of hatha yoga.  This is a very gentle class suitable for people in good health who are  new to yoga, seniors, or those with some limitations.  Standing, seated and floor postures will be explored, with chairs or props for added balance and stability.

 

Vinyasa Yoga is a flowing series of asanas linked with rhythmic breathing and ending with deep relaxation. It is a gentle, yet challenging practice of standing, seated, prone and balancing poses to increase strength, endurance, flexibility and balance.

Integrated Yoga blends the mindful slower movements of a gentle class with more challenging postures.  Drawing from various yoga styles including Kripalu, Vinyasa and Kundalini allows for a varied practice geared toward self-discovery.

Kripalu Yoga consists of three stages - willful practice, focusing on alignment, breath and presence; willful surrender, conscious holding of postures deepening concentration and inward focus; and meditation in motion, complete release of internal tensions and complete trust in the body's wisdom.

BolliYoga is a joyful blend of belly dancing, stability ball and yoga. Each week we practice some basic belly dance moves then put them all together in a short routine, followed by strengthening and toning with large stability balls that add resistance and improve core function and balance (building muscle helps keep the metabolism revved up - it takes more core energy to maintain muscle weight than fat), and yoga to lengthening the muscles, sculpt the body, release tension, and let go of worries. With a quiet mind, we can begin to look more deeply and uncover or rediscover our best, healthiest self.  Suggestions for home practice that may include physical exercises, journaling, and affirmations to work with on your own are posted here.

Pilates consists of a set of principles and a system of controlled exercises offering a total body workout that enhances quality of life by improving strength, flexibility, control, coordination, body awareness and stamina.  Pilates works several muscle groups simultaneously through smooth continuous motion, with a particular concentration on strengthening and stabilizing the core (the abdomen, back and pelvic girdle region - sometimes referred to as the "powerhouse").  Pilates helps to create a stronger, more flexible spine, restores postural alignment, increases joint range of motion, improves circulation, offers relief from back pain and joint stress, and helps to make the body less prone to injury. Pilates improves the way your body looks and feels - at any age!

The Artist's Way Using Julia Cameron's Books among others as  guides, this class is designed to help you get "unstuck".  Whether it's a life issue, or a creativity issue, whether you are an artist or not, this course will help you to unleash your creative side, and help you to discover your playful, inner child.  Each week we will explore a theme through a variety of media, and spend time in group discussion.                                                                                                                            

For Children and Families

Squeaky Sneakers with Sign  and  Preschool Playhouse with Sign  are interactive classes that incorporate movement through role playing, games and songs. Children will learn in a positive way to play and cooperate with other children of the same age. The classes will also expose families with young children to American Sign Language.  Signing improves communication, minimizes frustration, and accelerates language acquisition. Recent studies suggest that children as young as six months can benefit from consistent exposure to signing. 

Class activities are geared for 3-5 year olds Mondays and infants to 2 years on Tuesdays.  Classes are open to all family members and drop-ins are welcome.  There is no fee, and sign language materials are included. Parent/Caregivers must attend with children
